Mamula Moon, Terang Bulan or Whatever

OK, since “SOME SPIDER(202.184.241.30)” is not happy with what I wrote and I have no idea who copy who, Mamula Moon < -> Terang Bulan.

This is not important for me, but how could this fucker judging I writing this means I don’t love my country?

According to records there are two sources relating to the origin of the National Anthem before the song Negaraku became the National Anthem of Malaysia. The same tune was once the State Anthem of Perak and it was also the tune of a very popular contemporary song entitled Terang Bulan. According to Tuan Haji Mustapha Albakri, the tune was used as the Perak State anthem for the first time in England in 1901 during the installation of King Edward VII.

    Negaraku was originated from the song Terang Bulan and was compose much more earlier than Mamula Moon.. Mamula Moon was composed in year 1947 and Terang Bulan was play in 1887 during the installation of King Edward VII.

    it’s people like you that instigated the infamous 1969 racial riots. The insult to the ‘cina’ ethnicity was uncalled for. If i had a chance to reach into this computer screen and give your pussy-ass a nice whipping, i’d do it without hesitation.

    how would you like it if i called you a bangsat indonesian or no, a bangsat wherever you came from (cos it’s common knowledge that apart from the orang asli/asal, all other races/ethnicities are ‘settlers’).

    abt Mamula Moon, Terang Bulan, Negaraku…. i believe.. long long ago… there was apopular tune… maybe nobody remembers teh actual song… as teh story goes (as you can read from teh links given by paulooi…) well… perak adapted that tune as teh state anthem which today is our negaraku… in anotehr distant land… coincidentally someone heard of this popular tune as well.. as made it into Mamula Bulan… we should be happy… we MALAYSIANS have such a nice negaraku… can be played upbeat (a few yrs back) and so serenading… as in Mamula Moon… so solemn like our negaraku…
    and a piece of mind for spider… do u know that malays are from the Aryan race in China…??? so dont fight among brothers ok?

    I came all the way from Sarawak to KL for studying n working. 8 years I’ve been here, all I see are cracks (and craps!). I live in a state where we have so many races…you ask me how many also I dont know. We all can get along together. U can see Malay with Chinese, Iban, Bidayuh etc hang out together without issues. U guys have 3 races already chaotic?! I’m as a mixed Chinese, Iban and Melanau stand in the middle wacthing and wondering…tak malu ka?

    We are all Malaysians, treat each other nicely. Dont put label on others…thats not nice. Another 1969 is the last thing we want….lead by example. Remember, whatever you say the young ones are listening. Thats why we have many racial problems in school. My wife is a teacher, I know so well about this. They copy what you do…

  25. To my fellow Malaysians, let us put aside our differences and be an example to other countries that we can all stand united, putting aside racial differences. Whatever the history of our national anthem, at least we all can sing it or at least heard of it. We can all speak Bahasa Malaysia despite the constant errors in tatabahasa.
    We are all malaysians; chinese, indian or malays. What we lack is racial and cultural tolerance, thats why these racial remarks keep coming and coming.

    the issue of whether the song was copied or not does not arise. ok, the original composer of that score of music is Pierre Jean de Branger, a Frenchman. that song was very popular in Seychelles Island. It so happen that the Sultan of Perak liked that song and use it on his visit to England and officially adapted it as Perak State Anthem. and It so happen later that, Tunku Abdul Rahman and the National Anthem Committee at that time liked Perak State Anthem. Bear in mind that, they chose Perak State Anthem after reviewing more than 500 music score sent in by participants in a worldwide competition. so, whether it was mamula moon, terang bulan or whatever, it is now called Negaraku with slightly new music arrangement and new lyrics.

    The point is, it is a great song and hey, it’s our country national anthem. And there is no reason why we can’t at least like it. By the way, Malaysia is not the only country that use foreign songs as national anthem. there are at least 20 other countries out there adapt other songs as their anthem. and at least 5 countries share the same music for their national anthem.

    Probably not too late to say happy new year.

  34. Terang Bulan was banned in Malaya because the music was the same as/similar to Negara Aku. It was an Indonesian love song. Other similarities are the UMNO flag which is the Indonesian flag defaced with the kris in the roundel. The kris itself is a Hindu object – being the ‘thunderbolt’ of Indra, Lord of Rain and Thunder. The local adaptation is the handle. Malay itself is heavily related to Sanskrit although lately Arabic words have been brought in. So it is all rojak. But rojak, like Sarawakians, is a delicious mix.

  36. I have recently bought a black plate (record 78 rpm) and it is under the title of Malayan Moon. Hmm.. insteaad of Mamula Moon we now hear Malayan Moon. It is published under one of the most reputable international record labels during the 1920’s – 1950’s called Columbia.

    You see, what’sspecial about this piece of record which I have obtained today is that the song has 2 verses. The 1st verse is sung in English and 2nd in Malay or Indonesian; i dont know. The English is sung by a female singer, and the 2nd verse is sung by a Male performer. What surprises me is that they are both non-Malaysians, but rest assured they’re british, american or australian performers. However, the English verse is not th esame as what you hear from the hoo-haa-ed Felix Mendholsson’s version of Mamula Moon, the Malay version is somehow very close to the lyrics of Terang Bulan and considering the singer is “English” himself, I really salute him for having really great Malay intonation singing the song!

    I think this piece is rare. hmm…

    And another message to all users here, it is very important to cultivate the sense of belonging to the country and not discriminating races, religion and other cultural ethnics of the country. We have our own country, own national anthem, own national achievements, can we be at least civilized and not to discriminate other races; using the blog as a medium to discrimination? I have no problems with all races I get along well with them all, why discriminate?

You see, I remembered when the article about Mamula Moon ( idon’t know how far the title is the original) performed in Hawaiian version made Malaysians go obsessed over the song and thought it was a song originated from Hawaii, or have speculations that hawaiians sang this song. The truth is: every hit song ; almost all of them from the 1920’s have their songs re-performed by various musical conductors and performers. Among them are Victor Sylvestor, Felix Mendhelsson, Joe Loss, Mantovani, etc. In my own views, most reproduced songs in à-la-hawaii sound horrible. They are the ones who reproduce the songs in their own manner, changing the tunes from traditional Malay P. Ramlee beat to a Hawaiian Mambo Samba instrumental beat.

    The record which I own is the traditional Malay beat of which you can really hear them alot in the Late Tan Sri P.Ramlee’s movies, and music and I am quite convinced that this record is owned and had been existing for 60-70 years already. It can really tell that you’re convinced listening to the original authentic beat of the song.

  38. I am very keen to contact the person who has the 78RMP record of this song. The national anthem of Malaysia seems to have a great history. From, those who write in this column, it has links to Scheylles, Hawai, Indonesia and even Mendelshon. There is even mention in Singapore that an Eurasian gentleman may have write it. Does anyone have such information?

  39. Spider did not read “The History of The National Anthem Of Malaysia” properly. Based on the source from http://www.malaysianmonarchy.org.my, the tune was used as the Perak State anthem for the first time in England in 1901, but SPIDER wrote, it was play in 1887 ……during the installation of King Edward VII. Dear Spider, please improve your History lesson, or … at least improve you memory or upgrade your RAM.

Pause for a moment, Would any western dude/ artist go and translate Terang Bulan into Mamula Moon even as as a title for a song 70 70 years back? that era, are any western artist/ performers under so call malaysian culture influences? we were the one who were under thier influence. In the frst place we should have composed a national anthem solely for its purpose instead of changing the lyrics from some song that was popular. If the song was originated from Malaysia, Im sure we would have had the name of the composer by now…

    After listening to the “mamula moon” song, I was quite surprised how our song came through.
    And the most shocking part is the song tune is “EXACTLY” the same!

    There is no way the westerner have translate “Terang Bulan” into “Mamula Moon” for about 70 years back.

    But anyway, at least this song can give me a sense of calmness, you know, imagine you are on a beach sorrounded by beautiful hawaiian girls..?

    Anyway, just wanna say that actually a lot of older generation people knows where the song came from. I myself have heard the song since I was a kid. I mean Mamula Moon.

    Well, it doesn’t matter who copied who. Nowadays everyone is copying each other and that’s a fact. I don’t find the post provocative at all. it’s just the truth but some ppl are always denying the truth… sigh…

  47. this is just my opinion… i think the best that we can said is that Negaraku was actually taken from negeri Perak state anthem… and Perak state anthem was based on Terang Bulan and not Mamula Moon. So the interesting part now is the origin of the Terang Bulan song, and not Mamula Moon. There is also a possibility that both of the song had abducted the same melody, and if its true, i dont think that it is that weird that we are listening a similar melody played by Mamula Moon. right?

    right??

    And take a look at these facts belows :-
    1. Mamula Moon –> composed in 1947
    2. Perak State Anthem –> played in 1887 which we know was based on Terang Bulan, which considered as ‘lagu rakyat’ at that time… (usually it hard to tell the age of a ‘lagu rakyat’… maybe its already sang by the people for decades, 100 years… who knows?)

    so my point is… Negaraku is taken from Perak state anthem.. and NOT Mamula Moon…

    here is another portion of fact taken from to prove that Negaraku was never taken from Mamula Moon :-

    “Tuan Haji Mubin Sheppard who was at one time the Director of the National Archives had done a research on the origin of Negaraku. His sources were two sisters, Raja Aminah and Raja Halijah, the daughters of Sultan Abdullah and also Raja Kamarulzaman. According to these sisters, the first time they heard the tune, now known as that of Negaraku, was in Mahe, one of the Seychelles islands, where their father, the former Sultan of Perak, lived in exile. They said the song was very popular there and very often played by a French band which usually played a variety of songs and held concerts for the people of that island. It was believed that the melody of the song was composed by a French musician named Pierre Jean de Beranger who was born in France in 1780 and died in 1857.”

    well, for those who didn’t know, Seychelles islands are situated in Indian Oceans while Hawaiian Islands are situated in the Pacific which was never near. So I really don’t get the logic of how is that possible the 1940’s song from the Pacific (which of course, damn far to be reach) can be the origin of Terang Bulan melody that happen to be played in Seychelles 18th century?? further more, the song of Terang Bulan was as well popular in Indonesia in 18 and 19 century.

    so my hypothesis is –> Negaraku melody was taken from Terang Bulan and NEVER Mamula Moon. end.

    seems like a pretty bad argument with the spider guy. for everybody’s info, i’m a malay. i’m quite sad to see malays and other races bickering. especially as this argument here is uncalled for. yes our national anthem is an important item in our country. the history of the anthem? well, let’s just say that i don’t place it in 1st place. the people who chose terang bulan or mamula moon or whatever liked the rhythm. so they adapted it into negaraku. those are the basic facts. the end product is a song that represents Malaysia no matter who you are. if it was copied, then would anyone, after 50 years of independance change to an another song? unlikely. so let’s just ditch the who copied who. there’s enough arguments in newspapers already. i’d like a peaceful cyberspace please.

  49. Hey hey, don’t argue just for a song, Okay? Why not argue about the condemnation done by outsiders about us? It is a much better argument rather than to make ourselves look like strangers to one another. For example, I dislike people telling me that Penang is cheap-skate state, when Penang is one of the major states that influences the multiculturalism of KL, the Klang Valley and Malaysia.

    actually you guys dont have any idea why mamula moon or terang bulan became our national anthem…

    for me, i dont know too..but, through my research and my opinion, I think they choose those songs because probably on that time all the peoples in tanah melayu whether malay indian or chinese know the melody of the songs.. i mean both mamula moon and terang bulan…

    if u guys notice, this two songs were became hits during that time before our independent day…

    so…

    probably during the independent progressed, the composer got some idea..i mean brilliant idea..he borrowed the melody of mamula moon or terang bulan and he changed the lyric…just because everybody on that time familiar with that song even no tv no radio they still can sing that songs….so, with some little changes (the lyric), when he released the negaraku song, people can captured the melody and they even can sing it and remember every new words in that “negaraku” song..

    as u guys know, on that time as i mentioned, no tv no radio..just imagine, if the composer compose one new song, people cant sing that song…..such a waste..am i rite?

    besides, if the “borrowing” of the mamula moon and terang bulan melody was illegal, why nobodies sue Malaysia???

    probably our first prime minister asked the permission from the real composer of mamula moon and terang bulan….so….think bout it…

    be positive and think smart…

    u know…out there, many peoples dying to see our “multi-cultural country” destroy… actually malaysia is unique…they jealous because how malaysian can live peacefully and harmony even they are multi-cultural …. and multi-religion….

    we should love our country, no matter what people might saying bout malaysia, as a citizen, we should back up and defend our beloved country…not to insult it…
